Chai Desert

Al Seef in Dubai here smells like a cup of Arabic coffee spilled on a hot stone, with raspberry, saffron, and oud in the air. MEMOIRS OF A PERFUME COLLECTOR Chai Desert doesn't showcase the city's modern gleam, but rather its historical edge.

Saffron, pink pepper, and raspberry open the extrait spicy and sweet. Raspberry provides a red juiciness, but saffron quickly dries it out and pulls it towards a leathery, dusty warmth.

Qahwah, Arabic coffee, arrives with cedar and white floral tones. The coffee is dark and aromatic, the cedar evokes dry heat, and the flowers provide some air between them.

Shadi Samra dedicates the perfume to the historic Al Seef district, imagining a brief journey into the past along the Dubai coastline. Instead of literal sand, he uses spices, coffee, and dry wood.

Oud, patchouli, musk, and ambergris later firm up the base. Raspberry recedes, saffron remains as a warm thread, and coffee blends with dark wood and earthy patchouli.

Chai Desert is not a milky chai latte or a carefree gourmand. It is qahwah with raspberry, saffron, and oud on hot cedar — old Al Seef before the lights of new Dubai come on.
