Composed by Tom Ford

Fig in perfumery is cunning. It can smell green and milky like a broken leaf, creamy like a ripe fruit, or dark and sticky like jam. TOM FORD Figue Érotique Eau de Parfum attempts to capture this entire transition – from a green beginning to the moment a ripe fig is just about to burst.

First come fig leaf and bergamot. The opening is bright, green, and slightly bitter, without the syrupy sweetness that the name might suggest. Only after this does the exclusive Kadota fig accord take center stage: juicy, resinous, and full, more akin to a freshly opened fruit than the coconut aroma often passed off as fig.

As the perfume warms, ylang-ylang and the Muscovado accord emerge. The dark unrefined sugar here doesn't turn the composition into a dessert; it gives the fig a caramelized edge and a deeper, almost molasses-like warmth. Vetiver in the base brings back some dryness and prevents the whole story from ending up as a bowl of sweet fruit.

The most interesting aspect is precisely its development. Figue Érotique doesn't serve up a ready-made ripe fig in the first spray but gradually builds it: first the leaf and green rind, then the milky pulp, and finally warmer sugar, resin, and wood. This makes it sensual without the usual perfumery shortcut where "sexy" simply means lots of vanilla and amber.

This is neither an airy Mediterranean fig leaf scent nor a dense fig gourmand. It lies exactly between these two worlds. It has enough greenery for a warmer day, but also enough warmth so it doesn't disappear as soon as the sun sets.

If you love fig, green notes, ylang-ylang, dark sugar, and vetiver, Figue Érotique offers one of the more layered interpretations of this fruit. Just give it time on your skin – the initial green impression is intentionally not the whole story.
