Musk Deer

In the middle of the Siberian winter, an invisible message on a tree bark can be the difference between loneliness and a partner. ZOOLOGIST Musk Deer reconstructs this animal longing without animal products, through musks, oud, flowers, and cold wood.

Cardamom and calamus oil open the composition aromatically, spicy, and slightly bitter. Rose and sambac jasmine absolute then bring warmth that breaks through the imagined frozen air.

Patchouli and Atlas cedar create a dry forest floor, while labdanum absolute introduces a resinous, animalic depth. Ambrette and orris absolutes provide a bodily musky powder without the use of real deer musk.

Pascal Gaurin dedicates the story to the male musk deer who searches for food and a mate among bare roots. Long fangs serve to fight rivals, and scent marks carry a call through the forest where the animal has been hunted almost to extinction for centuries.

Laotian oud and Australian sandalwood later create a dark, creamy-woody base. The flowers recede, the cedar remains cold, and ambrette and labdanum maintain the warm illusion of fur and skin.

Musk Deer is not an innocent "clean musk". It is synthetic musk in a Siberian forest, with ambrette, orris, Laotian oud, and cold cedar — a love message from an endangered deer without a single animal sacrificed.
