If Tuscan Leather is a wild leather jacket with raspberry and smoke, TOM FORD Ombré Leather Eau de Parfum acts as its more polished cousin – still dark, confident, and distinctly leathery, but easier to get to know.
Leather is, without a doubt, the main star here.
And it’s black leather: smooth, deep, and realistic enough that for many, the first encounter conjures up a new leather jacket, a quality bag, or the interior of a brand new luxury car.
But Ombré Leather isn't just a leather scent.
TOM FORD officially builds the composition around black leather accord, cardamom, jasmine sambac, patchouli, white moss, and amber. Vetiver also appears in the description of the perfume itself, which, along with patchouli, further emphasizes the dry, earthy side of the composition.
The opening is spicy and almost cold. Cardamom brings a freshness that prevents the leather from immediately becoming too heavy, and then jasmine sambac appears.
And it is jasmine that is one of the reasons why Ombré Leather works so well.
It doesn't try to make the perfume a floral scent, but rather makes the black leather softer and more sensual. You get an interesting contrast: something dark and almost animalic on one side, and smooth, sweet, and floral on the other.
The inspiration comes from the American West – the desert landscape, dust, hot stone, wind, and leather. TOM FORD doesn't hide this story: amber and moss are meant to evoke the warmth of rock and sand, while leather acts almost like a second skin on the body.
Perfumer Sonia Constant created this version of Ombré Leather, launched in 2018. Fragrantica and Parfumo both list her as the author of the composition.
Sonia Constant was trained at ISIPCA and Givaudan's perfumery school, and her works include TOM FORD Noir Extreme, numerous Narciso Rodriguez, Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier, and other famous perfumes.
On the skin, Ombré Leather becomes warmer and softer. Amber, moss, and patchouli gradually take on a larger role, but the leather never completely disappears.
That's why this is an excellent choice if you want a leather perfume that has a strong character but doesn't intentionally seem unapproachable.
Compared to Tuscan Leather, it seems less raw and much more "polished." And precisely because of this, Ombré Leather can very easily become a perfume that someone will wear often, and not just when they want to make a statement.
