Note

Oud Rosewood Cardamom Sandalwood Pepper Vanilla Vetiver Tonka Amber

Composed by Richard Herpin

Oud has a reputation for being a loud, animalic, and somewhat intimidating note.

TOM FORD Oud Wood EDP does almost the opposite.

Here, oud is polished, dry, and highly wearable. Instead of the whole composition smelling like raw agarwood, Oud Wood surrounds it with cardamom, pink pepper, sandalwood, rosewood, vetiver, tonka, and amber.

The result is a perfume that feels much more "wood" than "oud."

The opening is spicy and almost cool. Cardamom is particularly important – it provides that dry, aromatic freshness that immediately makes Oud Wood recognizable. Then, smooth woody notes and sandalwood appear, while oud remains dark and discreet in the background.

Tonka and amber later soften the entire composition, but Oud Wood never becomes a truly sweet perfume.

And that is its greatest strength.

It can be worn with a suit, a T-shirt, to work, dinner, or practically anywhere you want to smell sophisticated without feeling like the perfume entered the room before you.

Perfumer Richard Herpin created it in 2007 for the Private Blend collection, and Oud Wood has become one of the most famous Western approaches to oud over the years.

If you're usually afraid of oud because you associate it with very animalic, medicinal, or extremely intense scents, this is actually one of the easiest places to start.

Just don't expect an "oud bomb."

Oud Wood is primarily an elegant woody perfume with an oud accord – and that's precisely why it's so easily wearable.

Fragrantica

Users often describe it as a modern and very polished oud without the typical animalic character. One review particularly highlights dry wood, spices, creamy oud, and cardamom and pepper, which lend a lightness to the entire composition.
Parfumo

Parfumo

One recent review sees it primarily as a cardamom and smooth wood fragrance, where all elements combine into a recognizable oud accord without the impression of true, wild oud oil. It is precisely for this reason that users consider it very safe and suitable for business.

For one user, Oud Wood evokes the image of a damp forest after the rain – earthy, woody, and spicy, but without the "barnyard" character of oud.
