Azalai

In the middle of the Ténéré stood a single acacia tree, about 150 kilometers from the nearest other tree. STORA SKUGGAN Azalai smells of gold, salt, and sweet resin along the route through which Saharan caravans have passed for centuries.

Blood orange and saffron give the opening a dazzling, golden-red warmth. The orange is juicy, but the saffron quickly dries it out, transforming it into something more mineral, dusty, and expensive to the touch.

Acacia gum brings a syrupy sweetness, while amber and frankincense create a salty, resinous contrast. Mint and dried fruits evoke Tuareg tea and provisions, small signs of life on a route through the vast desert.

Olle Hemmendorff dedicated the perfume to the Azalai caravan route and the Tree of Ténéré, which reached water more than thirty meters below the sand with its roots. Revered as a landmark and a symbol of endurance, the tree was knocked down by a drunk truck driver in 1973.

Velvione in the base gives a soft, lustrous musk sensation, almost like warm skin. As the blood orange fades, saffron, amber, and acacia remain, condensed into a golden trail with a thin line of smoke.

Azalai is not just a perfume about desert heat. It is saffron, mint tea, and the gum of the last acacia tree—the scent of a landmark that survived the Sahara, but not man.
